Early Nature Books for Fact Seeking Little Nature Lovers

Little ones are naturally inquisitive about the world, especially the natural world. Board books and other early picture books seem so simple but they’re actually very complex. Clever ones are not just designed to entertain through their words and illustrations but are part of a sensory feast for babies and young children. Many also impart significant facts that help small kids to make sense of the world around them.

This blog post will share some of the fabulous books we stumble upon that help children discover more about the natural world. It will continue to be added to as we discover new early nature books.

A brilliant series of books that have enthralled our daughter for years and still do now she’s seven are the 199 book series from Usborne. They are perfect for popping in your bag when out and about, sturdy and lay out lots of nature items in categories. Here’s all the 199 books.

Maisy’s Planet

A lovely introduction into the natural world for small children is through the use of familiar characters. Characters that children have already been introduced to feel safe. It’s a good way of giving children opportunities to diversify their reading choices and preferences in a gentle way.

Maisy’s Planet is a new series of books from beloved author and illustrators Lucy Cousins. This explore and learn series are a delight for nature inquisitive kids. I’m not sure which one I love more. Maisy Loves Bees and Maisy Loves Trees are such tender introductions to the wonders of bees and trees respectively.

Lucy’s classic illustrative style truly brings these titles to life. As I mentioned before, the familiarity of style means it can be easier for children to switch between genres. If a child has enjoyed Maisy story books then they may well enjoy moving into the non-fiction world of nature with the guiding hand of Maisy.

The books explore what, how and where questions with answers that have a good balance between text and illustrations. Beginning to be able to ask and understand questions is an important early years skills. What other questions might the reader be able to pose?

The facts are presented in a succinct way yet ensuring correct terminology is used. At the back of each title is a gate style page which opens the spread out into a wider view. A real treat and I do hope that Walker Books bring out more in this sweet series.
