Walker Books
This tree doesn’t look like it’s doing very much: it just stands there in the sunlight, big and GREEN. But this tree is busy… Starting with the secret workings of a tree, this book transports readers billions of years into the past; back to the moment when plant life first appeared on our planet. Covering its evolution, the steady emergence of fossil fuels and the extraordinary communities of plants around the world today, Nicola Davies and Emily Sutton combine essential biology with a powerful message – a call to protect the most precious colour on Earth … GREEN.

Dynamic Book Duo
When you see the names Nicola Davies and Emily Sutton you know you are in for a true treat. Green does not disappoint. Since seeing Nicola Davies talk about one of her other books at Stratford Literary Festival last year (The Star Whale) I’m even more enthralled when I read one of her books. As now, I see her thirst and zest for all things nature jumping off the page.
I’ve witnessed this incredible, passionate woman talking about the things she’s experienced in her life that have changed her and she’s ready to share her secrets with you. This time Green shares the secrets of trees.
Green – Non Fiction Wonder
There is a wealth of information packed into this wonderful picture book. As with all Nicola Davies books she enriches your knowledge through scientific vocabulary that is explained in a very accessible way.
The book explores trees in an expansive way. We go all the way back to the first microbes 4.5 billion years ago right up to present day, out of this Earth and beyond in both time and space. We look at plant cells and the reciprocal relationships that trees and plants have with other organisms both flora, fauna and fungi as well as diving deep into the ocean.
Green and Emily Sutton
Emily Sutton weaves her spell over Nicola’s words making this a dreamy book for children and adults alike. Emily has such a beautiful, recognisable style – rich illustrations filled with beautiful patterns. There’s so much to look at and once you’ve read through the book I urge you to go back and look more deeply at each spread. We spot something new every time we read.
A spectacular book to add to your shelves and libraries.
We enjoy Raising Little Shoots #ExploringNatureWithChildren curriculum and this book would be an ideal spine for use in one of the tree exploration weeks to investigate the wonderous world of trees further.
