Skunk and Badger Book Review

I have thoroughly enjoyed Skunk and Badger. It’s the kind of book perfect for reading snuggled in a blanket with a cup of herbal tea. As I read this book there were subtle homages in my thoughts to reading Wind in the Willows as child. I adored the characters of both Skunk and Badger in this story.
Skunk and Badger Synopsis
Badger lives alone doing Important Rock Work. He leads a predictable, solitary life driven by habit and routine. That is until Skunk arrives and turns his life upside down. Skunks warm and fun plus he cooks! The dichotomy of their two ways of life leave Badger in a state of flux wondering just how he feels about this unexpected guest. With chicken shenanigans to contend with and a sly stoat will a frosty badger see the value of kindness and friendship before his heart becomes as hard as some of his rocks?
A Shared Love
It’s one of those books where you’re hoping things will work out how you hope and you spend a lot of the book with a gentle smile on your face. Badger’s passion for rocks is one that I share and this book absolutely makes you want to go rock exploring. For my daughter this book is a little old for her to read herself but it’s the perfect read aloud for me to read to her.

Book Style
The style of the book is quite old fashion which I love and you eagerly anticipate the next illustration by the master that is Jon Klassen. The paper in the book is a beautiful, thick, matt cream and the illustrations have pinches of colour on contrasting silky sheets of white. It feels wonderful to hold in the hand, delightful to look at and even better to read.

Skunk and Badger Recommendation
The text would be suitable for children who have been reading independently for a while with an interest level of around 6+. As an adult I highly recommend this to children and adults of all ages. It’s a quirky, feel good book that will leave you remembering the important things in life.
