Author Events – Starstruck
When Floss our daughter met Jamie Smart at a book signing she was so star struck that she couldn’t speak. After we moved away from the table she stood still and said in a slow, in awe voice, “that was Jamie Smart!”. I love seeing how excited she gets at every book he releases – especially Max & Chaffy.
The book signing was for a Bunny Vs Monkey book. We’re huge fans of this series by Jamie and his other bestseller series Looshkin! Max & Chaffy books are a new adventure from Jamie and Hunt for the Pirate’s Gold! is the fourth book in this serial.
Max & Chaffy Vs Bunny Vs Monkey Vs Looshkin
Max & Chaffy are an easier reading level than Bunny Vs Monkey and Looshkin. This is where I’ve mentioned in other posts that reading for pleasure is so important and book choices made by children should not be based on reading level and challenge.
Floss absolutely adores the premise of the Max & Chaffy books. Yes they are an easy read for her, but who doesn’t love an easy read that brings you so much joy!
The finding Chaffy feature has her completely hooked and she loves needing to find additional chaffies through the book.
Max & Chaffy What’s it All About?
Set on Animal Island you’ll find Max and her friend Chaffy. They like to go off and explore the island to find other chaffies. Each book sees them in search of more chaffies. What’s a chaffy? Chaffies are small and round with one and a half ears and like to eat lettuce… well maybe not all chaffies like to eat lettuce. Some chaffies are different from others.
Max & Chaffy Book 4 Already!
David Fickling Books kindly sent us an advanced copy of Max & Chaffy: Hunt for the Pirate’s Gold! that publishes on the 1st August 2024 in the UK. We loved the first three books. The first two we borrowed from the library. Book 3 Floss got for Christmas. We were delighted to get an early peep at book 4.

Max & Chaffy: Hunt for the Pirate’s Gold!
Book 4 sees main character Max, along with trusted sidekick Chaffy off on the hunt for more chaffies. This time they enlist the help of the rather moody Foghorn.
It’s not long before the trio becomes four. With the help of Puffa-Chaffy and their special underwater bubbles we’re diving deep into pirates, maps and treasure! All chaffy books are an imaginations paradise where anything can happen – and does.
I love how grumpy Foghorn shines through as a hero with his kind heart towards Puffa Chaffy when he is feeling nervous or scared. It’s a heart melting moment every time.
Each spread is fun and playful with a vibrant colour palette used that really appeals to young readers. Well I say that, I’m in my 40s and I love these books! Speech bubbles are clear with the majority of words being in lowercase. Perfect for early readers.
There’s a heavy weighting towards illustrations in the book with small bite-size speech bubbles. This amount of text means children feel very satisfied that they are making good progress through the book. There’s chapters in the book and the story is told completely in speech. A great book to explore how to write speech.
At the end of each book there are other items to return to the book and find. It’s like a mini Where’s Wally.
