Review – Nature All Around: Birds
‘Nature All Around: Birds is a stunningly informative treasure of a book to tantalise all young children into the magical world of birds.’
Nature All Around: Birds
Children’s non-fiction books are just incredible and this one – Nature All Around: Birds is no exception. Personally, I’ve always enjoyed children’s non-fiction books over adults. You have to be exceptionally good at your subject matter to be able to write so that the information is accessible to children in a fun and informative way. Pamela Hickman is one of these writers. Where the magic happens with children’s non-fiction is that captivating facts are intertwined with the most splendid illustrations that form a wonderful learning treasure.
Nature All Around: Birds is stunningly illustrated by Carolyn Gavin this book is a beautiful introduction to birds. I love how it journeys through the seasons to tell us more about these spectacular creatures. Pamela and Carolyn harmoniously come together to explore the anatomy and habitat of different birds in a way that is so accessible to young children.

Readability
It’s a lovely blend of text and images. The words are not obscured by the pictures which makes it an excellent choice for early independent readers. The publisher suggests a reading/ interest age of 7-10 years, however, my daughter who is four found the book fascinating when we shared it together. There are small sections of text which you can choose which parts to read aloud to younger children as you explore the illustrations together. We loved the section on how to be a beginner bird watcher.
Here you can see a great inside look at the book and just how suitable it would be for your bookshelves.
Forgotten Childhood
It’s so sad that it’s been shown that some children don’t know the names of common birds such as robins. This book is a lovely way to introduce the special world of birds to them. It will give them a real zest for using the book as an observation and exploration guide. There’s also a lovely project to make a bird feeder at the back of the book too. A note that this book uses the word Fall as opposed to Autumn, however the books enjoys a plethora of birds from across the globe and I found it very suitable for my UK based nature loving daughter.
I highly recommend this book and will absolutely be looking into the rest of the marvellously, magical nature series. The series of wonderful books includes a trees, bugs and plants title that preceded this fabulous birds edition. Links to books can be found below with further information on titles and more images.
