Top Ten Tuesday – Freebie Week – Book Wishes

I’ve been absent a lot this year but looking forward to being back. I’ve been in and out of hospital so many times in the last nine months. Finally, I’ve just had major surgery to hopefully end that cycle. The recovery is going to take a while but luckily I’m able to read and blog!

Joining Back in with Top Ten Tuesday

I’m joining in with Top Ten Tuesday. Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl and it’s for anyone who loves books, lists and great bookish company! Sounds perfect to me.

Book Wishes for 2023

This week is a freebie week but as I’ve missed so many I’m going to list mine and my daughters current book wish list for the 2023. It’s in no particular order but these are all books Floss (my daughter) and I are longing for!

Book Series are High on the List

Noticing that most of the books we’re looking forward to are books that we’ve already enjoyed previous ones in a series. Book series are so important to children as they help to develop a passion for reading and a confidence in their choices.

Floss can get so excited about new books in a series, especially if she gets a glimpse of what’s to come in the previous book she read. She actually remembers the publication date of books and asks me if they’re on order or requested from the library!

Top Ten Tuesday Book Wishes for 2023

  1. Nature School

This one has caught our eye being the nature lovers we are.

  1. Weird and Wonderful Nature

We love this series of books by the publisher DK. They’re exquisitely illustrated and a great coffee table book.

  1. Draw with Rob In Space

Draw with Rob is such a superb set of books for budding illustrators. Floss adores them. You can see examples of previous books and how to find Draw with Rob on YouTube here.

  1. The Story Orchestra The Planets

If you haven’t already discovered this series you really must. They’re incredible. A new one is usually released each year before Christmas and I often give them as gifts to children. Find my reviews of previous books and activities to enjoy here.

  1. Bunny Vs Monkey The Impossible Pig

Have you read any of these? They’re hilarious and Floss just can’t get enough of them. Graphic novels are having a real growth when it comes to young readers and they are a great doorway into books for lots of readers for whom large expanses of text can seem daunting.

Here’s the others in the series. They’re from a weekly comic called The Phoenix that we now subscribe to. You can try 6 issues for £1 here.

Book Wishes Continued…

  1. Bumble & Snug and the Shy Ghost

If you’re looking for a first introduction to the world of graphic novels then Bumble & Snug are ideal. The Shy Ghost is the third book in the series and Floss still reads the previous two oodles of times over. They’re cute, fun with vivid illustrations and brilliantly entertaining stories. We’ve got this one from the library but Floss loves it so much I’ve ordered it today.

  1. Genie and Teeny Wish Upon a Star

A brilliant series for newly independent readers of early chapter books. They’re black and white but have a great balance of illustrations to help support early independent readers with comprehension and stamina. Each book has been so entertaining with such endearing characters as Genie and Teeny. We can’t wait to read this one.

Author Steven Lenton also produces some lovely limited edition pins to go with the book series. I’ve ordered the latest one for Floss. You can find them in his Etsy shop here.

  1. A Poem for Every Summer Day

I’m always on the look out for great, especially seasonal, poetry. If you’d like to introduce more poetry into your life then do check out my blog post A Poem a Day for inspiration.

  1. The Silk Roads

Not so much for Floss but this is one that I’m eager to read. My other half is reading the ‘adult’ version but I can’t see why I’d want to read that one if I can read one with beautiful illustrations!

  1. Finn’s Little Fib

A series that needs no introduction I’m sure. Tom Percival’s whole series are exceptional and we’d highly recommend all of them. Floss is mighty excited to see the latest title is shocking pink!

Do go and check out others who join in with the Top Ten Tuesday meme. I’ve particularly enjoyed finding some YA fantasy reads here and Leah’s choices for Disability Pride Month here. One of my all time favourite books When Life Gives you Mangoes was featured here. It’s a middle grade book but one that everyone should read.

  1. I am sorry to hear about your health issues! I hope that you heal quickly from your surgery. I agree, book series are important for children! My kids loved to read series growing up, and still do 😉

    1. Thank you. I couldn’t agree more. I know my Mom and I still read new titles that come out from our favs.

  2. I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve been in and out of the hospital. That’s no fun. I hope your surgery takes care of things so you don’t have to worry about it anymore.

I haven’t heard of any of these books, but they all sound like interesting reads. I hope you and your daughter enjoy them!

    Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!
