This blog post will go through why fine motor skills are so important. After the post will explore a range of toys and activities to develop fine motor skills.

Why Are Fine Motor Skills so Important

Fine motor skills involve the coordination and control of the small muscles in the hands, fingers, and wrists, enabling precise movements and dexterity. Gross motor skills also play a part in supporting fine motor skills. Here’s why fine motor skills are so important for children:

Independence

Fine motor skills enable children to become more independent. They can feed themselves, dress themselves, and perform personal hygiene tasks like brushing their teeth and tying shoelaces.

As children master these skills, they gain confidence and a sense of autonomy, which is crucial for their self-esteem and self-reliance.

Creativity

Fine motor skills play a significant role in artistic and creative endeavors. Children use their hands and fingers to draw, paint, sculpt clay, and engage in various craft activities.

These creative outlets not only foster self-expression but also enhance cognitive development by promoting problem-solving and critical thinking.

Social Interaction

Many childhood activities involve fine motor skills, such as playing with building blocks, board games, and puzzles. These activities encourage social interaction, cooperation, and teamwork.

Children learn important social skills like sharing, taking turns, and communicating while engaging in these fine motor skill-based activities.

Cognitive Development

Fine motor skills contribute to cognitive development by helping children understand spatial relationships, shapes, and patterns.

Activities like stacking blocks, sorting objects, and threading beads enhance their problem-solving abilities and spatial awareness.

Academic Success

Fine motor skills are closely linked to academic achievement. Children need these skills to perform tasks such as holding a pencil, cutting with scissors, and manipulating small objects.

Without these skills, it can be challenging for children to complete assignments, take notes, and engage in activities that require precision and control.

Handwriting

Developing fine motor skills is essential for the development of legible handwriting. Neat handwriting is not only important for academic success but also for effective communication throughout a child’s life.

Fine motor skills allow children to form letters and numbers accurately, improving their ability to express their thoughts in writing.

Preparation for Future Careers

Fine motor skills are not only essential for childhood development but also for future career success. Professions in fields like medicine, engineering, and arts and crafts require excellent fine motor control.

Developing these skills early in life can open up a wide range of career opportunities for children as they grow older.

Overall Coordination

Fine motor skills are a building block for overall coordination. When children develop these skills, they are more likely to excel in activities that require both fine and gross motor skills, such as sports and dance.

Emotional Regulation

Fine motor activities, such as colouring or knitting, can have a calming effect on children. Engaging in these activities can help children manage stress, anxiety, and other emotional challenges by providing a soothing and focused outlet for their energy and emotions.

In conclusion, fine motor skills are the cornerstone of a child’s development, impacting their academic, social, emotional, and physical growth. Parents, caregivers, and educators should provide ample opportunities and support for children to develop these skills, as they are essential for a child’s well-rounded development and future success in various aspects of life.

Fine Motor Skills Toys and Activities

Below you will find a selection of toys and activities that would help develop fine motor skills including co-ordination and strengthening of muscles to support fine motor development. Some items may have been sent for review but thoughts are my own.

Magnetic Montessori Style Toy

We love this magnetic toy! I’m a Mom and erstwhile early years and primary school teacher. I’d have loved to have this in my classroom.

The board itself is super sturdy and comes with a simple design of two wooden pieces that you can slot the game into so that it stands. I have to say my daughter Floss wasn’t fussed about the stand and used it without, but I can see for younger children or ones with fine motor difficulties that the stand would be beneficial.

This design is ice cream sundaes which my daughter loves. There are so many skills that get developed while using this toy. Colours, numbers, fine motor skills and hand eye co-ordination are all being worked on. My Floss decided that the number on the sundae dish was the price and asked us which two colour sundae’s we would like and then added them together to tell us the cost.

Floss is almost 7 and this puzzle suggests it’s for 2-5 year olds. I felt it was something my daughter would love as there is a real mindful element to transporting each of the balls with the magnet. She loves it and has played with it for over an hour at a time.

Poke Fun

Oh wow these are genius! You get 10 images on foam boards, little squares of fabric and a poke tool!

These are brilliant for developing fine motor skills and hand eye co-ordination while being a great, fun craft.

Each design can be removed from the background – they become a great set of two piece puzzles. The back of each design has a sheet that can be removed to turn the design into a large sticker. You could then embellish it on whatever you would like.

I did find that I could gently remove the fabric piece from the hole so if you were careful you could reuse the designs. This would be quite helpful if you were using them as a fine motor activity in a classroom setting.

I love the mindful, calming nature of this activity too. Just perfect for my creative daughter. Would make a great present and probably something that people haven’t already got. Sensory, tactile fun!

Origami

We love origami and it’s great for developing fine motor skills especially fine motor control.

This little origami set has very clear instructions of what to do to make each project. No matter how clear the written and picture instructions are for origami, it can be easy to get a little stuck with folds and turns. One of the best parts of this pack is that on each project spread there is a QR code that you can scan that takes you to a superb YouTube video that shows you how to make the project. The videos are short but very informative.

Brilliant set that’s great value for money and would make a great gift. Everything comes nicely packaged in a cute little box.

Beeswax Sheets Candle Rolling

I’ve been rolling beeswax candles with my daughter for quite a while. It’s a lovely activity to enjoy and one that the whole family do. The set in the image below comes with a lovely selection of colours – we’ve purchased this set several times.

Unicorn Night Light

Any little creative project is great for developing fine motor skills. This unicorn night light is adorable! I’m really impressed with the quality of the product and for the price I think it’s great value for money. If you’ve got a mythical, unicorn loving child to buy a gift for this would be perfect. I love that it’s a DIY kit so that young crafters can get creative and personalise the night light exactly how they would like.

The green and pink ‘flower’ mix that you add on last is a little ‘charged’ when it comes out of the plastic and goes everywhere and sticks to everything. We’re used to messy crafts but if you’re not get prepared with a tray or a large sheet of paper underneath to help with the clear up and you’ll be fine. It requires 3 x AAA batteries that are NOT supplied. A cute, fun project that we love.

Beads

Firstly, I love the mindful nature of working with beads. The act of threading beads onto a string is really calming. Secondly, it’s a great activity to do with others and be social if you’d like. They are also perfect for fine motor skills development.

The added benefit of sets with letters is you’re developing spelling/ phonics skills as well. We love this set of letters you can see below and this is a great basic set that we got for an arts and crafts party.
