We always enjoy finding activities that encourage learning through play, especially ones that work well for mixed ages and family time. This ocean-themed bingo game definitely ticks those boxes.

What is Fintastic Bingo?
Fintastic Bingo is a beautifully illustrated family bingo game created by Yuval Zommer and published by Thames & Hudson. Designed for children and families, the game focuses on ocean creatures from around the world and introduces players to a wide variety of marine life in a fun and accessible way. We are huge Yuval Zommer fans. We adore his books and have had the pleasure of attending in person drawalong events with him. His books feature heavily on this site. I’ll add some links at the bottom of this article if you’d like to find out more. Let’s get back to Fintastic Bingo…
Inside the box you’ll find:
- Double-sided bingo boards
- Sea creature tokens
- Shell counters
- A fact booklet filled with information about the creatures
- It all comes in a box that opens by way of a draw with a little ribbon tag to open it. You could use a little drawstring bag or something similar to put the sea creature tokens in or you could just use the draw like we did
The gameplay is very simple, making it suitable for younger children while still being enjoyable for older siblings and adults too. Players take turns drawing sea creature tokens from the draw and matching them to their bingo boards. The first player to complete their board wins. We also shout out for lines – when you get a full row or a column.
Although the gameplay itself is familiar, the ocean theme and educational element make it feel much more engaging than a standard bingo game.

Beautiful Artwork That Draws Children In
One of the first things that stood out to us about Fintastic Bingo was the artwork. Yuval Zommer’s illustrations are bright, detailed, and full of personality, helping each sea creature feel exciting and memorable. Each token is like a mini piece of art.
Children are naturally drawn to colourful visuals, and this game really encourages curiosity. There are familiar creatures like whales and seahorses alongside unusual marine animals that many children (and adults – me included) may never have encountered before.
The illustrations also make the game feel calm and inviting rather than overly noisy or overstimulating, which is something we always appreciate in children’s games. Screen-free family fun.
The quality of the pieces feels lovely too, making it the sort of game that would work well as a gift or something to bring out regularly during family game time.

Educational Benefits of Fintastic Bingo
One of the strongest parts of this game is how naturally the learning happens through play. For me this is always the best type of learning.
While children are focused on matching the creatures and completing their bingo boards, they are also developing:
- Vocabulary skills
- Observation and matching skills
- Turn-taking and listening skills
- Memory and concentration
- Knowledge of ocean animals and habitats
The included fact booklet adds another educational layer and gives children the opportunity to learn a snippet about some of the creature. This can easily spark further conversations and lead into wider ocean-themed learning activities.

For home educators or families exploring nature topics, this game could fit very naturally into an oceans or marine life study.
You could even extend the learning by:
- Looking up additional sea creature facts
- Creating ocean-themed crafts
- Listening to underwater sounds
- Reading marine life books alongside the game
- Using the creatures as prompts for drawing or creative writing – Yuval Zommer beautiful illustrations always gets us wanting to be creative
- With my teacher hat on – I particularly like that you push out your own tokens and counters so you get left with the circle and square grid patterns above that can easily be used to incorporate a little maths such as multiplication array play.
We always love educational resources that encourage children to ask more questions, and this game definitely has that potential.

Who Would Enjoy This Game?
Fintastic Bingo would particularly appeal to:
- Children who love animals and sea creatures
- Families looking for screen-free activities
- Home educating families
- Nature-loving children
- Fans of Yuval Zommer books
- Parents wanting educational family games
Because the rules are straightforward, younger children can join in easily, while older children still enjoy discovering unusual creatures and reading the facts.
It’s also a lovely option for grandparents or mixed-age family gatherings because the gameplay is simple enough for everyone to understand quickly.

Things To Consider Before Buying
Although we really enjoyed the game overall, there are a few things worth considering.
Younger children may need support reading some of the sea creature names, particularly the more unusual ones. However, this can also become part of the learning experience. The names of the sea creatures are in block capitals.
Children (or my other half) who are very competitive may focus mainly on winning the bingo game rather than reading the facts at first, although the educational side can naturally grow over time as familiarity increases.
The game is also best enjoyed with multiple players, so it works more as a family or group activity than a solo learning resource. However, our daughter enjoys using the game and getting creative with her art supplies.

Final Thoughts
Fintastic Bingo is a lovely combination of educational learning, beautiful artwork, and classic family gameplay. It manages to introduce children to marine life in a way that feels playful rather than overly “teaching-focused,” which is often where the best learning happens.
We particularly loved the illustrations, the ocean theme, and the opportunities it creates for further conversations and learning beyond the game itself.
If you are looking for a screen-free educational game for children that encourages curiosity about the natural world, this is definitely one worth exploring.
For families who enjoy nature studies, ocean topics, or simply cosy family game time together, Fintastic Bingo would make a wonderful addition to your shelf. There’s also a Bugtastic Bingo version too! You can often find them reduced, second hand here. You can find lots of Yuval Zommer books second hand here.
