Easy Beginner Macrame Heart Decoration

Last year I loved making instructions for a macrame candy cane that’s perfect for Christmas. Using the same knots – crown and gathering knot – you can make this incredibly delightful heart decoration that is perfect for home, weddings or gifting occasions like birthdays and Valentines. This post will give you printable step by step instructions and top tips for creating the macrame heart.

Heart Macrame Decoration

This is another project that I’ll be bringing to the lovely community arts and crafts group that I volunteer at. It’s a perfect project for beginners and you could easily support children to have a go at this project too.

Beginner Macrame Projects

If you are looking for other easy macrame projects for beginners then I would suggest trying this spiral pattern or the crown knot as a simple key ring (I call it the octopus). The same techniques for the heart project are used in creating the candy cane.

Further into the post below you will find a super slow (no time lapse) YouTube video tutorial for making the heart. There’s also a pdf illustrated set of instructions to make this adorable macrame heart decoration.

Macrame Heart: What You Need

You can find the resources I use here.

  • Macrame cord – you need two different colours. I’ve done a dark and light pink combination. The Range have a light and dark pink available and their prices are amazingly good for macrame 3mm cord. I used 3mm 4ply twisted
  • Wire – bendable but sturdy enough to hold its shape – I use floristry wire at least 30cm (I’ve used 30cm and 36cm and just trim the longer wire if I need to). The gauge I go for is 18 gauge and you can use traditional green floristry wire mainly. However, if you want different coloured stems then you can get a white wire and colour the stem to your desired colour
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape/ ruler
  • Optional pot. You could recycle a yogurt pot or reuse another item you have at home. I’ve used 3cm mini terracotta pots and 5cm terracotta pots. The 5cm does turn out more stable.
  • Plasticine – this again is optional – I used plasticine to secure my heart into the pot

Heart Macrame Cord Lengths

I used 3mm 100% cotton 4 ply macrame cord for the tutorial

  • Colour A – 200cm
  • Colour B – 200cm
  • Colour A or B – 40cm (this is for the gathering knot at the bottom so you can choose which of your colours to use)

If this is the first time you have tried this pattern I would suggest that you use contrasting colours. This will make the tutorial instructions much easier to follow.

Macrame Cord Pricing

I’m UK based. As a rough guide I look for 3mm macrame cord that is less than £6-£6.50 per 100m. If you’re UK based then The Range have some amazing deals on macrame cord which brings the price down to around £2.50 for 100m. You can find good multiple sets of colours that work out good value.

Macrame Heart Decoration Video Tutorial

Below you will find the super slow macrame tutorial for the heart decoration. What does super slow mean? It means you can follow along and the video isn’t sped up. Join me for the tutorial and a natter whilst learning to create the macrame heart. You can save the video to a playlist on YouTube so you can access it when you need it. You can find printed instructions below as well.

Simple Heart Macrame Instructions

Below you will find a macrame tutorial sheet for the heart. The heart pattern uses the crown knot for the main part of the heart and then a gathering knot to complete the end of the project. I like to think of points of a compass to help me remember the pattern for doing a macrame crown knot.

Macrame Heart Top Tip

Don’t make your knots too tight so that you are able to push the wire in. As I explain in the video tutorial you can place the wire in position after the first couple of knots if you find that easier. I find it much easier to add it after.

Heart Pattern Change Ideas

Once you have got comfortable with the pattern you can make changes to the macrame heart. Here’s some ideas:

  • Obviously, you can change your colours. You could make the heart all the same colour but I’d recommend doing this once you know what you’re doing
  • Change the colour of the 40cm cord to make a contrasting gathering knot
  • Make your heart BIGGER. If you’d like to make it bigger then increase the two coloured strands that are 200cm. You can keep the 40cm length for the gathering knot the same length. You will need to change the length of the wire
  • A chunkier heart. Instead of 2 x 200cm lengths of cord cut 4 x 200cm lengths of cord; two in each colour. Follow the pattern the same but work with two cords for each colour rather than one. With the gathering length of 40cm increase this to 50cm just so you have enough. You may need longer floristry wire – it depends on your knots
  • If you’d rather not have the tassel at the end then there is the option to glue and cut the cords off to get a rounded end
