Super Slow Macrame

Are you like me and need to take things a little slower when you’re learning? Even when I slow them down, YouTube video tutorials are often fast forwarded and I find it hard to follow. This blog post will give a tutorial for macrame spiral pattern.

So further below you will find a super slow – no time lapse – tutorial. This tutorial will show you how to make the spiral pattern which uses a half square macrame knot.

What You Need

You can find the resources I use here.

  • Macrame cord
  • Ring
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape/ ruler
  • Something to secure your macrame cords to (clipboard or book and bulldog clip)

Macrame Cord

I used 3mm macrame cord for the tutorial. For the spiral key chain tutorial I used 5 x 45cm lengths and 1 x 200cm length. You can use one or two colours.

I’ve used two colours on the video so that it is easier to see what I’m doing. I’ve also nicknamed the middle cords on the tutorial as ‘tentacles’. You’ll see what I mean!

You can use different thicknesses of cord and you can adjust the width of the spiral by using less than five original tentacle strings (thinner) or more than five (thicker).

Macrame Cord Pricing

I’m UK based. As a rough guide I look for 3mm macrame cord that is less than £6-£6.50 per 100m. You can find good multiple sets of colours that work out good value.

Half Square Knot Tutorial Sheet

Below you will find a short tutorial sheet on how to make a half square knot. You can find full details in the video tutorial above to make the spiral key chain.

Macrame Tassels

When you’ve finished your spiral you double knot (see video tutorial). You can choose to keep the cords twisted or unravel to get a more frayed effect.

Half Square Knot

When you’ve completed the tutorial you will know how to do a half square macrame knot.

In the video tutorial there is a little bonus skills section that explains how to go from a half square knot to a full square knot. Then you’ll know how to complete two macrame knots for further projects.

This is the first time I’ve made one of these types of videos and I’d appreciate comments on what you think. What worked well and what I could do to make them better. Thank you.
