Yoto Player, Yoto Mini, Voxblock, Toniebox 2 or Toniebox Lite?

We’ve had our audio players for a number of years now and each one has its own unique qualities. The choice has grown considerably too, with the arrival of Toniebox 2, Toniebox Lite and the new Yoto Player 4th Gen and Yoto Mini 4th Gen.

On this website you’ll find detailed reviews, comparisons and tips to help you get the most from whichever player you choose. This post is a little different.
Rather than comparing every specification, I’m going to tell you which audio player I would personally choose in very specific circumstances – and why.
Perhaps you need something incredibly easy to set up, have a child who is particularly rough with their toys, want the best option for travelling or you’re trying to keep ongoing costs as low as possible.
There’s no single audio player that wins every category, so let’s find out where each one really shines.

Navigate Which Audio Player?
Rough Play
If you have a child who can be rough with their toys or who may throw things when frustrated, I would still look very seriously at the Toniebox 2.
Its soft, squishy exterior and reinforced rounded edges give it a real advantage when it comes to knocks, drops and tumbles.
However, there’s now another player I’d consider depending on what you mean by “rough”.
The Yoto Mini 4th Gen is IP67 water and dust resistant and feels remarkably robust. When I attended the Gen 4 launch, Yoto even had a Mini being repeatedly bashed around in a demonstration while it continued playing.
So my choice would be:
Drops, throwing and very physical play – Toniebox 2
Puddles, rain, dust, spills and outdoor adventures – Yoto Mini 4th Gen
I’d still recommend an Adventure Jacket for the Mini to provide extra grip and help protect the casing from scratches.
No Access to WiFi
If you genuinely have no access to Wi-Fi at all, my top recommendation remains the Voxblock.
You can take it out of the box, switch it on, place an audiobook Block on the player and start listening. There’s no app or Wi-Fi setup required.
Yoto and Tonies can both work offline once audio has been downloaded, but they require connectivity for initial setup and downloading new content.
For grandparents, holiday accommodation without internet or families deliberately looking for something completely disconnected, Voxblock is still incredibly hard to beat.

Technophobe
My recommendation here hasn’t changed: Voxblock.
This doesn’t have to mean someone is literally a technophobe. It could be a grandparent, carer or anyone who simply doesn’t want to deal with apps, accounts, Wi-Fi and device settings.
Put the audiobook Block on the player and listen. That’s one of Voxblock’s biggest strengths and something I wouldn’t underestimate when choosing an audio player for somebody else.

Disney Fan
For a child – or adult – who absolutely loves Disney and familiar characters, my first recommendation would still be Tonies.
Tonies has a huge collection of recognisable characters including Disney, PAW Patrol, Gabby’s Dollhouse, Marvel and many more. Tonies often feature original cast audio, familiar songs and abridged versions of stories, although it’s always worth checking the exact contents before buying.
If you’re purchasing a new Toniebox, I’d choose between Toniebox 2 and Toniebox Lite depending on what you need.
Toniebox 2 would be my choice if you want the full experience, including Tonieplay interactive games and its additional bedtime features.
Toniebox Lite may appeal if you simply want the familiar Tonie listening experience in a smaller, simpler player and it is available in your region.
Lots of the audio on the Yoto Player are narrated retellings of the stories whereas Tonie characters are often created from the original source. It’s always worth checking before you purchase though to make sure you know exactly what to expect. Often Tonie characters have an abridged story with original cast and a few original songs too.
Ongoing Cost is Top Priority
If keeping ongoing costs as low as possible is one of your biggest priorities, I would still lean towards Yoto.
Make Your Own Cards allow you to add your own compatible audio, and there is a substantial amount of free Yoto content available too. You can also use the Yoto App and consider Yoto Club if that suits how your family listens.
Gen 4 gives families another useful option. The Green Button lets children access a curated selection of downloaded content without needing to have the physical Yoto Cards with them.
If the initial device cost matters as well as ongoing costs, don’t automatically assume you need the newest model. Older Yoto Minis and Gen 3 Players may still offer excellent value where stock is available.

Travel and Days Out
My top recommendation for travel is now the Yoto Mini 4th Gen.
The Mini has always been exceptionally portable, but Gen 4 makes it much better suited to being taken out and about.
It’s small, IP67 water and dust resistant and has 64GB of storage. The Green Button also allows children to browse a preselected collection of up to 20 daytime and 20 nighttime titles.
Compatible content works offline once downloaded, so you don’t necessarily need to take a wallet full of Yoto Cards with you.
We’ve found our Minis invaluable for holidays, car journeys, hospital stays, appointments and unexpected A&E visits.
If I wanted one audio player specifically to live in a travel bag, this would currently be my choice.
Very Young Children
For a very young child, my top recommendation is Toniebox 2. It is suitable from age 1+ and the basic interaction is incredibly intuitive: choose a character, put it on top and listen. The soft, squishy design is also particularly suited to little hands and inevitable tumbles.
Toniebox Lite is another option in regions where it is available, particularly if you want the core Tonies listening experience without all the additional Toniebox 2 features.
For a one-, two- or young three-year-old, however, I would personally lean towards Toniebox 2 if budget allowed.
Interactive Games and Play
If you specifically want screen-free interactive gaming, my current recommendation is Toniebox 2. Tonieplay offers interactive stories, games, quizzes and challenges using Toniebox 2. Toniebox Lite does not support Tonieplay.
Yoto also has interactive audio content, but some interactive Yoto Card functionality is not yet fully compatible with the new Gen 4 platform at launch.
For interactive gaming right now, Toniebox 2 gets my vote.
Bedtime and Routines
For our family, my top recommendation for bedtime would currently be the Yoto Player 4th Gen.
It has a new full-panel night light, but the feature that makes the biggest difference to me is the nighttime Green Button playlist.
Parents can create a curated collection of up to 20 nighttime titles for each individual device. Children still get to choose independently, but they’re choosing from a manageable selection rather than your entire audio library.
We’ve previously stopped using physical Yoto Cards at bedtime because too much choice created unnecessary friction. This feels like an excellent solution to that problem.
Toniebox 2 is also a strong bedtime option, particularly for younger children. It has a Sleep Timer with Light, Bedtime Mode and Sunrise Alarm.
Bookworms and Older Children
For a keen reader or older child, I would generally recommend Yoto.
Yoto’s library includes a substantial range of longer audiobooks, factual content, podcasts and music, while Make Your Own Cards give families additional flexibility.
This was something we noticed ourselves as my daughter grew older: our Toniebox was particularly loved when she was small, while Yoto increasingly became the player she reached for as her listening tastes developed.
Gen 4 adds another useful layer because favourite content can now be browsed directly with the Green Button without needing to find the physical card.
Hospitals and Appointments
This is a more specific category, but it’s one I feel strongly about from personal experience.
My choice would be the Yoto Mini, particularly the new Mini 4th Gen.
We’ve used our Yoto Mini through hospital stays, appointments and unexpected A&E trips. It’s small enough to live in a bag, and familiar audio can offer something comforting and predictable during long waits or stressful situations.
The Gen 4 Green Button makes this even more practical because favourite downloaded content can be ready on the device without needing to remember the corresponding physical cards.
People with Sight Loss (including blind and partially sighted people)
