Mini & Mama Book Chat
If you’d like a peep inside Crazy About Cats then join Floss and me as we delve into this wonderful book in our first ever ‘Mini & Mama Book Chat’ video. We’re looking forward to turning this into a series exploring different books we love.
Ideal for Young Naturalists and Budding Zoologists
Recommended for ages 7+, this book is a brilliant addition to any home education collection, classroom library, or animal-themed reading nook. It encourages critical thinking, supports curiosity about the natural world, and sparks a love of learning through rich visual storytelling.
Layout, Text & Features
The text is well laid out with good levels of spacing between facts making it easier for early independent readers to enjoy. There’s good use of headings and sub-headings as well as labelled diagrams. There isn’t a glossary but key terms are in bold throughout and are explained within the paragraph they are written. I do like this feature as it means that understanding of key vocabulary is captured swiftly by the reader with the aid of images to help imbed new vocabulary.
The typeface is clear and easy to read. There is reasonable spacing between sentences to make fluency of reading easier. The pages are all coloured and therefore the text/ background may support dyslexic readers. Mostly contrast is good between text and background. However, there are some spreads in the book where there may not be enough visual contrast for visually impaired readers.

There’s a contents page that has some great headings. We particularly like Paws for Thought and Pride and Predators (more for the Jane Austen fan that one). The index is a little different from a standard alphabetical index in that it’s laid out by type of cat and then alphabetical. Next to each common name there is the scientific name of the cat as well as where they live in the world.
Owen Davey – Flying Eye Books Series
And let’s not forget – this is non-fiction at its finest, showing kids that facts can be just as fun as fiction. Owen Davey has such originality in his style of illustration. I’m sure you will have seen other in this fabulous series. His books aren’t just books, each spread being a work of art that could easily adorn your walls rather than your bookshelf.

Others in the series include:
- Bonkers About Beetles
- Crazy About Cats
- Fanatical About Frogs
- Mad About Monkeys
- Obsessive About Octopuses
- Smart About Sharks
- Curious About Crocodiles
- Passionate About Penguins
