Yoto has quickly become one of the most popular screen-free audio players for children. But popularity doesn’t automatically mean it’s right for your family.
I have a wealth of experience with using audio players in our home including Tonieboxes for around 7 years, Yoto Players for around 5 years and most recently the addition of Voxblock for our home. What Is the Yoto Player?
The Yoto Player is a screen-free audio player for kids. Instead of using a touchscreen, children insert physical audio cards to play stories, music, podcasts, and activities.
Features include:
- Card-based playback (no scrolling screens)
- Simple pixel display (icons, not video) – you can even create your own pixel art
- Nightlight function (on 3rd Gen)
- Room thermometer (on 3rd Gen)
- Daily podcast
- White noise and sleep sounds
- Bluetooth speaker option
There are currently two main models:
- Yoto Player (3rd Gen) – larger, designed for bedroom use but is still portable
- Yoto Mini – smaller and portable, ideal for travel but can equally be used at home

What the Yoto Player Does Really Well
1. Encourages Independent Listening
One of the strongest arguments for buying Yoto is independence.
Children can:
- Choose their own card
- Insert it themselves
- Adjust the volume
- Skip tracks
Once set up, no app navigation is required.
For many families, this independence alone makes the Yoto Player worth it.
2. Large and Growing Content Library
Yoto’s content library includes:

The range is broader than many competitors. New releases generally drop weekly on a Thursday.
Due to the significant breadth of options available to be played on the Yoto it’s important to select carefully the content for your child. For example you can add RSS podcast feeds (find out more how to do this here) to Yoto cards to be able to play. However, Yoto have not necessarily checked the content and therefore it’s important to check that you are happy with the topic, content, words used etc.
It’s worth noting that lots of the ‘Disney’ content on Yoto cards tends to be retold stories rather than original cast voices. If Disney is really important for your child then it might be worth considering a Toniebox.
3. Make Your Own (MYO) Flexibility
This is where Yoto stands out. The ease of making your own content is great and you can save much more content compared to other players.
With Make Your Own cards, you can:
- Upload your own MP3 files
- Add public domain classics (e.g. from Librivox)
- Record your own stories
- Create custom playlists

For home educating families or parents who want more control over content, this flexibility is a major advantage.

The Downsides of the Yoto Player
If we’re asking honestly “Is Yoto worth it?”, we have to look at the drawbacks too.
1. Initial Cost
The Yoto Player is not inexpensive. It is a considered purchase, not an impulse buy. However, if initial cost is a big factor then do look at the Yoto Mini Player.
In addition to the device itself, you may also buy:
- Audio cards
- MYO card packs
- Protective cases

2. Ongoing Card Costs
Individual cards are a premium product.
Building a large collection can become costly. Although, make your own cards can significantly reduce this cost.
While Yoto Club membership offers discounts and credits, this introduces another subscription to manage. However, I’d argue that this is one of the best subscriptions that we have. 3. MYO Has Limits
Although flexible, Make Your Own cards:
- Have storage limits, but have always been able to meet our needs
- Require setup time – this is certainly something to consider. Make Your Own (MYO) Cards are like falling down the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland! You can opt to do things quickly but you can also start wanting to make cover art and pixel icons!
- Depend on legally sourced audio. Copyright still applies to audio and it’s important to consider this for wherever you live. This post gives you free content options to try. As always, check suitability for your family.
Bottom line it’s powerful – but not entirely effortless.
Who Is the Yoto Player Best For?
The Yoto Player is often worth it for:
- Children who already love audiobooks and/ or love stories
- Families reducing screen time
- Home educating families
- Bedtime story routines
- Long car journeys
- Independent play time
If your child naturally enjoys listening, Yoto tends to integrate well into daily life. Although, if audio content is new to your child you may need to help them learn how to interact with a Yoto.
Who Might Yoto Not Suit?
The Yoto Player may not be ideal for:
- Children who prefer visual stimulation -although the pixel display can help with this
- Families looking for the lowest-cost audio option
- Those unlikely to purchase additional content unless you plan to utilise MYO Cards or the Yoto Club
- Homes where devices are rarely used consistently. If consistent use feels unlikely, the cost may not feel justified.
Is Yoto Worth It Financially?
This depends on usage, what content your child enjoys and how much you make use of all of Yoto’s features
If your child:
- Listens daily
- Replays favourite stories
- Uses it over several years
- Makes use of MYO cards
Then the cost per hour of use becomes very reasonable. If it’s rarely used, it will feel expensive. Frequency of use is the real deciding factor. Although, don’t expect your child to instantly fall in love. This post goes through tips to help your child engage with audio content.

For home education, the Yoto Player can:
- Support independent listening
- Reinforce classic literature
- Provide background study listening
- Encourage comprehension stamina
- Vast range of non-fiction topics
When paired with physical books, it becomes a strong literacy tool. For some home educating families, this is where Yoto becomes truly worth it.

Final Verdict: Is Yoto Worth It in 2026?
For many families, yes. Certainly, for us it’s been an incredible, independent tool that continues to make bedtime much smoother as well as giving us a vast array of content to enjoy and explore at home and out and about.
The Yoto Player is worth it if:
- You value screen-free listening
- Your child enjoys audiobooks or listening to stories
- You’re willing to invest in content or time to create content from free sources
- You plan to use it consistently
It may not feel worth it if:
- Budget is tight
- Your child rarely listens to audio or isn’t very interested in stories. If they love facts and non-fiction then there are still lots of options
- You prefer subscription streaming apps and use them already
The key question isn’t simply “Is Yoto worth it?”
It’s: Will my child use it regularly?
In homes where audio becomes part of daily rhythm, the Yoto Player often becomes a long-term favourite. It’s certainly the case in our home. We utilise both a Yoto Player and a Yoto Mini Player.
In homes where it gathers dust, it becomes an expensive speaker.
Used well, it’s a tool that can genuinely support independence, imagination, and literacy.
