These give really good detail of what to expect in the story. There’s a break down of what is in each card and the extras you get in the card pack.
Whether you’ve got a budding secret agent at home or a child who loves immersive storytelling, Spy Club Yoto Card pledges cards packed with suspense, problem-solving, and plenty of undercover fun. I hope we don’t have to wait long for it to arrive as we’re so excited!
Eagerly Anticipating this Arrival
I’m not sure who is more excited about this release. Our daughter loves puzzle books and is currently obsessed with this series of Puzzle Quest books. Meanwhile, the other half and I love nothing more than mysteries and escape room challenges. To say we have high anticipation for what’s to come from when the Yoto Spy Club pack arrives would be a real understatement. This post will tell you a little more about the Yoto Originals Spy Club cards that we’ve learnt from Yoto and as soon as the cards arrive and we’ve dived in I’ll be back to let you know what we thought. UPDATE: It’s arrived – read on!

The first release in this new series is called Mission: Bring Back Boyd.
What Is Spy Club?
Spy Club is a Yoto Original interactive card – a first, unique adventure created specifically for Yoto listeners. If you are a Yoto Club member then all three Yoto Cards are available now in your library. However, this is a set of cards where to be able to fully interact you need to purchase the pack with the additional parts to get the full immersive experience. Below is the message you get when you try to play the card in the app – you can link to a MYO card but again you need the physical pack to be able to play along fully. I see what you did there Yoto and I’ve totally succumbed and got the physical pack with my Club credits!

Spy Club introduces children (and adults – I can’t wait 🤣) to a secret organisation of kid spies. They’re tasked with solving clues and cracking codes to complete their first mission.

In Bring Back Boyd, listeners are introduced to the world of espionage and meet a host of intriguing characters. The mission? To track down and rescue Mr Boyd, who’s gone missing from Spy Club. From gathering intel to decoding messages, young listeners are drawn into the case, taking on the role of secret agents.
A new format of Yoto Original cards. Unlike passive listening experiences, Spy Club encourages active participation. Children will feel like they are part of the mission, making it an ideal choice for curious minds who love to problem-solve. My daughter loves things like this. She’s previously enjoyed the SuperQuesters book series due to her love of problem solving.

Spy Club Video Teaser
Here’s a fabulous little teaser from Yoto of what to expect. I love the idea of using the pixel display to reveal a secret, hidden message. Whoever came up with that idea – genius!
What’s in the Box?
UPDATE: ours has arrived…
Who Is It For?
Spy Club is aimed at children aged 8 to 12 years old – a slightly older demographic than many of Yoto’s other story cards. It’s exciting to see new content coming along for this age range. The themes of mystery, teamwork, and critical thinking make it especially appealing to children who enjoy detective stories, escape rooms, or spy-based play.

Having played Spy Club I would agree with the recommended age range. Some of the challenges do take a good bit of thought. Floss is 8 and her and I worked together to help solve the challenges.
Story Structure and Audio Format
Bring Back Boyd is structured like a spy mission, broken down into digestible chapters that make it easy to pause and resume as needed. This chapter-style format helps children follow the mission step-by-step while encouraging them to listen carefully and think logically. With this in mind it’s worth making sure that your child is well versed in how to use the Yoto buttons before embarking on this mission.
The timeframe of this story isn’t shown and I believe this is because of the interactive element and you don’t know how long it’s going to take individual children to complete. I do think in light of the length of time not being set I’d recommend this Yoto card for during the day rather than as a bedtime one. For us we took a leisurely amount of time and it took about 2.5-3 hours but we did this in 3 sittings. It is helpful to have the natural pauses of different cards to be used.
As with all Yoto cards, the story can be played through the Yoto Player or Yoto Mini.

Spy Club Card Design
This card set truly excites me in its design. The physical cards feature a bold, spy-themed design that is sure to stand out from the rest of your collection. The cards visually sets the tone for an undercover adventure perfectly.

I don’t recall having a Yoto card that also has anything else other than the cards with it. There was great excitement when we opened the box and got to explore all the different elements.

Educational and Imaginative Benefits
As an erstwhile teacher I love that Spy Club promises to blend entertainment with learning:
- Critical Thinking: Kids are encouraged to solve puzzles, decode messages, and piece together clues.
- Listening Comprehension: The story format promotes attentive listening, following instructions, and memory recall.
- Imaginative Play: After listening, I think many children would be inspired to create their own spy games, write secret messages, and invent missions.
- Teamwork and Empathy: Themes of friendship and working together would reinforce positive social messages.
I think this card would be ideal for solo listening, but also work brilliantly as a shared experience – siblings or friends listening together and discussing theories as the mystery unfolds.
One thing I found very different about Spy Club to other resources for children this age is that you are expected to ‘solve’ situations with the resources you have without being told exactly what to use. The information is there but you have decide from the clues what to use.
Final Thoughts: Should You Get It?
Well I’m a little bias as I’ve already ordered it and eagerly waiting for it to arrive (it’s now arrived so read on). My only consideration is whether my daughter will want to continue to use the Spy Club cards after she’s completed the mission. So, will it be a one hit wonder? Only time will tell and I’ll be sure to report back swiftly. You never know it could end up being one of those cards that get played over and over that I can recite by heart!
UPDATE: In my opinion, I would consider this card to be very distinct and different from all other Yoto Cards. Rather than thinking in terms of an ‘audiobook’ that can be used over and over again (although for lots of people audio books are a one read wonder) think of Spy Club as an experience.
Consider the price of the card as equivalent to going to the cinema (although I’d argue that Spy Club lasts longer) or a trip out. We had a brilliant, shared experience together and thoroughly enjoyed every moment. We’ve completed the adventure but I can’t see us using the card again unless we have family or friends over and did it with them again (keeping a little quiet and gently supporting).
With screen-free storytelling, problem-solving elements, and a gripping narrative, this card aims to tick all the boxes. And for Club members, it’s an easy win for your next credit purchase.
