Earth Day
Earth Day is the 22nd April each year. Each year has a different theme and this year’s theme is Planet Vs Plastics. It’s a theme that you could explore with children in many different ways. One way is looking at how plastics affected our oceans. The two books I’m recommending to you are Little Turtle and the Sea and Turtle Rescue. Both are firm favourites of ours.

Little Turtle and the Sea
Little Turtle and the Sea is a longstanding favourite of ours from Little Tiger Press. This title is for an audience of around 3+.
Little Turtle loves the ocean with her whole heart. As the years pass, she repeats an incredible journey across the world to the beautiful coral reefs. But one day she finds that plastic has invaded her ocean. Could Turtle’s journey be over forever?
Little Tiger Press
As with both of these titles it’s a fictional story packed full of facts. These hybrid fiction/ non-fiction books are so good at helping children to broaden their reading interests.
Turtle Rescue
Turtle Rescue is perfect for children who love learning about the ocean. It feels very much a follow on of Little Turtle and the Sea for an older audience (around 5/6+). It’s a book ideal for my daughter Floss who prefers the format of a fictional story. However, loves facts if they are intertwined within a story as is the case in Turtle Rescue.
This books sees Flora, Fauna and little Bud on holiday but they head of to explore the reef in a boat to try and find sea turtles. The book deftly ties wonderous facts about turtles and other aquatic life, conservation, looking after the planet and rewilding with the fictional adventure of the family. It’s a fascinating read and one that we both thoroughly enjoyed.
My mind is still blown with the fact about the turritopsis dohrnii jellyfish – I won’t spoil it for you.
The book is cleverly designed with intriguing die cuts, changing direction pages, opening out spreads and cut aways. There’s excitement and intrigue throughout. The illustrations exude power, strength and movement and truly bring the book to life and make you feel you are immersed in the ocean along with them. There’s also a wonderful textured front cover – which if you’re a sensory seeker like us is just has to be stroked! Superb book.
Bookish Play
Floss had a great time with the resources, she built an aquarium and then the fairies came in and rescued all the animals and rewilded them back into the ocean!
