Bookworm Buzz Page 1: Worries & Refugee Awareness

Books About Worries for Kids
September brings lots of new situations for children but worries can happen at any time of year. Here are four books that help children to talk about worries. They also support children to understand that they are not alone in worrying whilst giving strategies to be able to cope with worrisome situations.
Refugee Awareness Books
Books can be a sensitive way to talk about important world issues. The Boy at the Back of the Class is a well known book that is often used in classrooms with KS2 children. You can find out more about Saving the Butterfly in this blog post. No Refuge is a follow on from No Country a graphic novel series by Joe Brady.
Bookworm Buzz Page 2: Dapo Adeola, Graphic Novels & Frogs

Illustrator Spotlight: Dapo Adeola
Dapo Adeola is an award-winning illustrator and storyteller whose vibrant, joyful artwork brings stories to life for children. He is best known for his work on Look Up! and Clean Up!, where his bold, colourful illustrations capture the energy and imagination of young readers. Dapo is passionate about representation in children’s books and aims to create characters that reflect the diversity of the world around us. Through his illustrations, he wants every child to see themselves as a hero in a story, whether it’s exploring space, solving a mystery, or simply enjoying everyday life.
Beyond his picture books, Dapo has worked on a variety of projects celebrating creativity and culture. He has spoken openly about the importance of diversity in publishing, encouraging young people to embrace their identities and passions. Dapo’s style is playful, energetic, and full of heart, often featuring expressive characters and dynamic scenes that make readers feel part of the story. His work has inspired children, parents, and educators alike, showing how illustration can be both fun and powerful in helping children understand themselves and the world around them.

Bookworm Buzz Page 3: Book Match Autistic Character, Audiobooks & Farmyard Favourites

Book Match: Autistic Character
I identify as autistic and truly believe that reading books where you feel seen and represented is so important. Gina Kaminski may be a child’s picture book but it’s a book that I think everyone should read.

We originally had our hearts melted by Gina Kaminski when she Saved the Wolf. You can find out more about this tremendous book here. Discover all about her latest adventures into the land of traditional tales when she Rescues the Giant whilst on a school trip. I cannot recommend these books enough for helping children who are autistic feel seen.
Audiobooks: Yoto, Voxblock & Tonies
Audiobooks do not replace physical books in our home but are used daily for times when we wouldn’t be reading a physical book. We are well versed in Yoto Players, Tonieboxes and Voxblocks. Here’s links to more information on the audiobooks in Bookworm Buzz.
The posts below will give you more information about each type of audio story box:

Farmyard Favourites
A real mixture in this edition. Animal Farm is a classic and I’ve love re-reading this book that has been reimagined with new illustrations. The Gobble Gobble Moo Tractor Book I must have read more than one hundred times to my daughter. It’s an absolute favourite of ours and had to be included in farmyard favourites. Old MacDonald on the Move had us intrigued as we’re massive Philip Ardagh fans. Another top favourite of ours is the Bunnies on the Bus and others in the series. This new release did not disappoint one bit and is a sheer romp of story that will have you giggling away.
Bookworm Buzz Page 4: Poetry, Hobbit Readers & Mid-Autumn Festival

Poetry: A Welsh Dragon!
What a great way to explore the Welsh language with …And I Hear Dragons. This curation of poems is interspersed with English and Welsh language. If you’d like to incorporate more poetry into your family life check out this post.
The Hobbit: What to Read Next?
The Hobbit was may favourite book as a child – it probably still is now! I loved the fantasy, magic and adventure. I’ve actually just purchased a graphic novel version. I haven’t read it yet but interested to see what this will be like. If this is the type of genre that your child enjoys then check out Greenwild, The Green Kingdom, Hedgewitch and Frostheart as their next possible reads.

I’ve previously reviewed Hedgewitch and you can find our more about this one here.
The Moon Rabbit – Mid-Autumn Festival
Myths and legends are a genre that fascinates me. This latest release from Walker books is exquisitely illustrated and tells the story of a Chinese Myth often remembered at mid-autumn festival.

Book Provenance
As always, books on the website come from a range of sources. Some are sent by publishers, authors or illustrators for consideration to review, many are purchased and lots join us for a short time from the library. My views are always my own or my daughters.
