Exploring Nature with Children Autumn Leaves Week

This week starts at the end of September this year and you can check out the resources for this week here.

Exploring Nature with Children Harvest Moon Week

In 2025, the Harvest Moon falls on October 6 (rising into full at about 23:47 EDT), making it the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox. This year, it is also a supermoon – appearing slightly larger and brighter due to its proximity to Earth.

Starbird book flatlay with the Usborne Book of the Moon, four wooden stars to the left of the book. A hand stained moon wooden disc with white rocks and desert rose rock, to the right are the numbers 1 to 5 using SumBlox blocks. Flockmen (small wooden people) painted as two aliens and an astronaut with blue and yellow rainbow blocks to form a rocket.

This is a great little printable for showing the phases of the moon as a free download. If you haven’t already tried the cookie moon phases activity below it’s always a winner. Oreos work well but we use a free from alternative.

Exploring Nature with Children Autumn Pond Study Week

Floss loves learning about ducks and she always loves to know the specific names of fauna. For example she doesn’t want to just call something a bird or a duck she wants to be able to say goldfinch or mallard. We’ve realised that we don’t know as much about the different types of ducks so that’s something we’re going to explore this week.

A wooden duck toy set surrounds a printed 'Duck Detective' identification sheet featuring images of various duck species, displayed on a wooden table.

Wildlife Watch have this free duck download that we plan to use to help us identify. Talking of finches – not pond related – but you might like this free finch ID sheet.

Each year we love to build on our nature exploring from the year before. Nature journaling is one way we love to dive deeper into nature together.

A workspace featuring open sketchbooks, printed photos of ducks and a scenic river, alongside colored pencils and drawing materials, suggesting an activity related to nature study.
