Step Into Questland

When curious best friends Lilli, Leo and Bea discover an old board game tucked away in an ancient chest, they’re whisked away to the magical world of Questland. There, they’re transformed into the SuperQuesters: Lillicorn, Leo Zoom and Bea Bumble. These are the same characters that we’ve seen in previous books but with new powers and a vital mission!

The village of River Crest is in danger! Evil goblin gardener Mortifer is using his Beaver Bots to build destructive dams and releasing Dragonfly Drones to spread poisonous plants. Can the SuperQuesters save the village using teamwork, clever thinking and STEM smarts? As always with SuperQuesters you get bang up to date stories based on current affairs and facts from the STEM world. SuperQuesters books appeal to a wide audience but would particularly call to children who are eco-conscious.

A Magical Mix of STEM and Storytelling

Mission River Crest Rescue is an exciting story that isn’t just bursting with adventure. It’s packed with real-world science and technology themes, secret codes, and puzzles that encourage children to solve problems just like real scientists and engineers.

If you have a child who loves solving puzzles you might be interested in this series that my daughter has enjoyed. Both SuperQuesters and these are ideal for travelling, eating out or waiting at appointments to keep kids entertained.

What I particularly liked about the chapter book SuperQuesters, that’s different to the original four books, is that the characters state the problem, you then have the opportunity to solve it and then the characters talk through how they worked out the solution. Therefore, you get to check your answer, but are supported to find the solution if you weren’t sure.

Fans of Peanut Jones, Izzy the Inventor, and Leonora Bolt will feel right at home in this clever, colourful world. Also, budding superheroes and science enthusiasts alike will find plenty to love. Currently, our daughter is eight and I’d say this is a great age for the chapter book version. Blending the thrill of fantasy with brain-teasing science fun, Mission River Crest Rescue is the perfect choice for young readers.

Why You’ll Love This Book

  • A fun and accessible introduction to STEM, supporting Key Stage 1 and 2 curriculum topics in science, maths and computing
  • Engages with environmental themes like conservation, rewilding and tech for good
  • Celebrates diversity and inclusion, with characters and creators from a wide range of backgrounds
  • Packed with activities to try at home or in the classroom including science experiments and brainteasers

  • Supporting cross-curricular learning through story-based STEM

Another book I’d highly recommend if STEM is an area you are focusing on is The Encyclopedia of STEM Words by Jenny Jacoby and Vicky Barker. We find this such a wonderful resource. Terms in SuperQuesters’ books are well explained through the text but this encyclopedia lets you discover a little more.

Considerations

If you’ve enjoyed the previous SuperQuesters’ books then it would be useful to manage the expectations of the reader that this book is a very different style. The previous books were vibrant colours and much more aligned as an activity book.

SuperQuesters: Mission River Crest Rescue is a black and white illustrated picture book. The font is clear with the illustrations not impeding on any of the text. The spacing between sentences, line length and general layout allow young readers to feel this is a pacey book that is easy to read.
