Puzzle Books for Kids

Puzzles book are ideal for lots of children. My daughter is going through a spell of being totally absorbed by them. She will often spend several hours lost in one. The recommendations in this Bookworm Buzz are from her. She highly recommends the Puzzle Quest books and there are lots of them with different themes. What she loves about these is that they are a story that you work through and solve problems.

Big Cat Books for Kids

Crazy About Cats

You can find out our thoughts about this fab non-fiction book here. Floss and I have also had a little chat about this one on YouTube so you can get a really good feel for the book below.

The Girl Who Lost a Leopard

The Girl Who Lost a Leopard is an incredible read. As an adult reader I thoroughly enjoyed it and would highly recommend to both children and adults. Nizrana has a beautiful way of writing that totally captivates you. Read our full review here.

Bookworm Buzz Page 2: Emily Gravett, Graphic Novels & SuperQuesters

Colorful infographic featuring children's book recommendations. It includes an illustration spotlight on Emily Gravett, highlighting her charming characters in books like 'Dogs' and 'Meerkat Mail'. The graphic also showcases graphic novels, particularly 'Bumble & Snug' and 'Donut Squad', and introduces the SuperQuesters series, promoting STEM education.

Illustrator Spotlight: Emily Gravett

Emily Gravett is a celebrated English author‑illustrator who has won the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal twice. Born in Brighton in 1972, she spent several years travelling around the UK before studying illustration at Brighton University; her debut book Wolves immediately earned critical acclaim and heralded a remarkable career.

Emily’s gentle storytelling, imaginative formats and richly detailed artwork makes all her books stand out – whether it’s a jaunty romp through dog breeds or a tender tale about finding belonging.

Graphic Novels: Bumble & Snug plus Donut Squad

Bumble & Snug and the Worried Dragons

This is book 5 in Mark Bradley’s incredible series. You can find out a little bit more about Bumble & Snug and the Jealous Giants here. Have a little look through with Floss and me in the video below.

Donut Squad – Neil Cameron

Donut Squad rocked up last year in The Phoenix magazine that we subscribe to and we fell in love. Are you Team Donut Squad or Bagel Battalion?! Depending upon your answer we may or may not be able to be friends! We were incredibly excited when this one was released as a book this year.

For more graphic novel recommendations check out this post with some of the latest Summer 2025 releases.

Favourites

Into Goblyn Wood by Anna Kemp

Favourites are those books that you return to time and time again or book that stay in your mind and fuel your book chat. In this Bookworm Buzz we’ve picked three very different favourites.

Into Goblyn Wood by Anna Kemp is a book that has made Floss want to be a writer. She’s begun to write her own story using inspiration from Into Goblyn Wood. We’re currently reading the second book The Hollow Hills – things are getting a little darker in this one. It’s so grippingly good!

A colorful children's book titled 'The Story Orchestra: Four Seasons in One Day' by Jessica Courtney-Tickle, with a rainbow-colored wooden toy in the background and a stack of other Story Orchestra books.

The Story Orchestra

Not just A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but all of this series are incredible. We have loved these since Floss was around two and continue to adore them. You can find out a little more about this series here.

The Invisible Guest in Moominvalley

We love everything Moomin but The Invisible Guest has been one that Floss has asked to be re-read so many times that I think I know it off by heart.

A children's book titled 'The Invisible Guest in Moominvalley' by Tove Jansson, featuring Moomin characters, surrounded by wooden mushrooms, apples, and a plush Moomin toy in a basket.

The Invisible Guest in Moominvalley is a heartwarming picture book based on Tove Jansson’s beloved Moomin characters. Although a picture book it is longer in text length than a standard picture book. Adapted by Cecilia Davidsson and illustrated by Filippa Widlund, the story introduces Ninny, a little girl who has become invisible due to mistreatment. Taken in by the gentle and accepting Moomin family, Ninny slowly begins to regain her presence – first her voice, then her body – as she experiences kindness, warmth, and belonging. With its gentle themes of empathy, healing, and the power of compassion, the book beautifully captures the spirit of the original Moomin stories while offering a meaningful message for young readers about the importance of being seen, heard, and loved.

Bookworm Buzz Page 4: Poetry, Isadora Moon Readers & Yoto Spy Club

Colorful page promoting the poetry book 'A Dinosaur at the Bus Stop' by Kate Wakeling, featuring illustrations and text about performing poems. Includes recommendations for fans of 'Isadora Moon', showcasing related books by Harriet Muncaster and others, along with a section on Yoto Spy Club.

Poetry: A Dinosaur at the Bus Stop

We’re mega poetry fans ensuring to get our daily does each day. We saw Kate Wakeling at a literary festival perform poems from her book A Dinosaur at the Bus Stop and it’s become a firm favourite for Floss. They’re truly brilliant poems and fun for all ages. If you get the opportunity to see Kate in person don’t hesitate. Do you have poetry teatime?

So, you’ve got an Isadora Moon fan but what to read next? This section tells you some of the fantastic series that you can move on to to help increase the breadth of reading whilst still staying safely in the comfort zone.

A hand holding a Yoto Spy Club audio card pack titled 'MISSION: BRING BACK BOYD', with various colorful ID cards in the background.

Yoto Spy Club

Consider this one more of an ‘experience’ like going to the cinema rather than an audiobook. If you’ve got a child who loves to solve puzzles this gives you a few hours of brain crunching entertainment! You can find out all about it and more of my thoughts in this post.
